ICC to vote on allowing up to 18 story structures to be built with wood

The International Council of Codes (ICC) will soon vote on a measure which would allow structures up to 18 stories high to be built with wood. Not only would this have a detrimental impact on our industry, but many experts have deemed the use of CLT’s as unsafe with potentially deadly consequences for these types of applications.

Read about the proposed code changes including expanding the use of mass timber for tall wood buildings from the current six stories to up to 18 stories. ICC members will vote on the amendments in November. Additional voting information can be found here.

We are not alone in this fight. Fire experts in the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) have both released strong statements of opposition to a series of tall wood code changes.

We need your help to stop the ICC from including mass timber in the 2021 Model Building Code. All you have to do is click on the link below and fill in your contact information. The software program “voter voice” will use your address to correspond with your local building official and let them know how wrong this proposal is. It literally takes less than a minute to complete the form.

Voting begins on November 1st so time is of the essence!!
