No Wavering on ELD Mandate Deadline, FMCSA Says

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has sent out a press release reminding the trucking industry that the final deadline for the ELD Mandate is approaching quickly.

On December 17th, all motor carriers and truck drivers subject to the electronic logging device rule must use an electronic logging device.

This deadline also pertains to grandfathered automatic onboard recording devices (AOBRDs), which will no longer be allowed under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations to provide records of duty status as a substitute to a required ELD. Motor carriers utilizing an AOBRD must have a fully operational ELD installed by the December 17th deadline.

The FMCSA has stated that there will be no extensions made to this deadline. Additionally, the CVSA emphasized that inspectors will begin enforcing the rule on December 17th; there will be no “soft enforcement” grace period.

The CVSA outlined the full details of the mandate and its associated rules in their press release. They also reminded the industry that the ELD final rule does not change any of the underlying hours-of-service regulations.
